Robot 7th Axis is a linear drive system used to move a robot along a linear axis; such systems are also called "Robot Transfer Units (RTU)" or "Linear Drive Units," enabling the robot to move to other workstations or units within the length of the linear rail to perform additional tasks.
Common industrial robots typically have six movable joints, i.e., "six axes." Adding an additional motion axis allows for a larger working range; this added external axis is referred to as the robot's "seventh axis."
Various implementations exist, including floor-mounted linear rails, overhead rails, gantry frames, vertical lift rails, and circular rails. Both the path and length of the seventh axis can be customized. When the robot travels on the rail, it must drag cables protected by a cable carrier for power and control signal transmission.
